Explore the Bible Study: Staying on Course
8:36 AMHave you ever made the mistake of failing to read the fine print when you made a purchase or a commitment to do something? Did you feel deceived? Sadly, many people who profess to believe in Christ have chosen to follow teachings or practice lifestyles that, had they read the fine print, they would have known they were being deceived. The LifeWay Explore the Bible Study: Staying on Course, helps us look at Paul's instructions to Timothy and the young church about avoiding false teaching that can cause us to get off course in our walk with the Lord.
Be sure to read closely all that is said by Paul in 1 Timothy 4:1-13 as you prepare to lead this study. You will also need to become familiar with the false teachings that had begun to influence the early church. These teachings are still prevalent today in many different forms. The proponents of such false teachings may have changed, but the ideology is still the same.
Here are three false teachings that you might want to learn more about as you prepare. The following links from Got Questions provides a good overview of these false teachings, and some of the content is incorporated into the Downloadable Optional Teaching Ideas.

Paul clearly describes the fact that the world is a constant battlefield between truth and falsehood. As believers, we should realize that we battle it daily. False teachers will continue to promote behavior that denies God’s purpose for marriage and other things such as certain foods. Others will promote a legalism that minimizes God’s grace and maximizes man’s rules. Because of this we need to continue until Christ’s second coming to train ourselves in godliness (1 Timothy 4:7).
